Flux Analysis

Flux analysis, or fluctuation analysis, involves comparing financial results to a reference point - like the previous month, year, or budget - while providing written explanations for significant variances.

  • Accounting Operations & Financial Close

Flux analysis, short for fluctuation analysis, is the line-by-line comparison of financial results against a reference point - prior month, prior year, or budget - accompanied by a written explanation of why each material variance occurred. It is performed both as a management review control during the close and as a substantive analytical procedure during an audit.

The mechanics are straightforward: compute the change in each account in dollars and percentage terms, apply a materiality threshold expressed as both an absolute amount and a percentage so that neither large-dollar small-percentage nor small-dollar large-percentage movements slip through, and investigate every line that breaches it. The output is commentary, and the quality of that commentary is what distinguishes a control from a formality. "Professional fees increased $180,000" restates the number. "Professional fees increased $180,000 due to $150,000 of transaction diligence costs on the pending acquisition, which will not recur after Q3, plus $30,000 of higher recurring audit fees following the scope expansion" explains it, identifies the driver, and tells the reader what to expect next period. Effective flux commentary is quantified, attributed to a specific business event rather than a general condition, and reconciled - meaning the explanations offered sum to the total variance rather than accounting for a fraction of it.

Flux analysis serves multiple audiences from a single exercise: it supports the controller's review control, feeds the MD&A or board reporting narrative, and gives auditors evidence that management reviews results with sufficient precision. Its practical weakness is that it is time-consuming and lands at the busiest point of the close, which is why commentary frequently regresses into restating arithmetic under deadline pressure.
