Form 1040
Form 1040 is the annual federal income tax return for individuals, calculating taxable income, tax owed or refunds.
- Individual & Pass-Through Tax
Form 1040 is the annual federal income tax return filed by individuals. It aggregates income from all sources, applies adjustments and deductions to arrive at taxable income, computes tax under the graduated rate schedule applicable to the taxpayer's filing status, and applies credits and prior payments to determine the balance due or refund.
The return architecture moves through defined stages. Total income captures wages, interest, dividends, capital gains, retirement distributions, and business and pass-through income reported on Schedules C, E, and F. Adjustments to income - the above-the-line deductions for items such as self-employed retirement contributions, health savings account contributions, and the deductible portion of self-employment tax — reduce total income to adjusted gross income, a figure that then governs eligibility for numerous phase-outs. Taxpayers then claim either the standard deduction, which the One Big Beautiful Bill Act permanently increased and which is indexed annually, or itemized deductions on Schedule A. Qualifying pass-through owners additionally claim the Section 199A deduction. Tax is computed, then reduced by nonrefundable and refundable credits.
Filing status — single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, head of household, or qualifying surviving spouse - drives the rate brackets, standard deduction, and numerous phase-out thresholds, and is often the highest-leverage determination on a return. Returns are due April 15, with an automatic six-month extension to October 15 available on Form 4868. As with entity returns, an extension postpones filing but not payment.
For CPA firms, the individual practice is defined by compression: a large volume of returns concentrated into a short window, dependent on K-1s and brokerage statements that arrive late, with quality risk concentrated in multi-state allocation, basis tracking, and correctly handling pass-through items.
